New Delhi: The Supreme Court recently ordered the formation of a new Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe allegations against Minister of State and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Govind Singh Rajput relating to the alleged illegal detention of an Other Backward Class (OBC) leader. The court's decision came after the OBC Mahasabha filed a writ petition seeking a habeas corpus order to bring Man Singh Patel to justice on the grounds of his alleged illegal detention.

The bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan directed the Director General of Police (DGP) of Madhya Pradesh to constitute a new Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case and complete its investigation within four months.

The SIT includes the Inspector General, Senior Superintendent of Police and Superintendent or Deputy Superintendent of Police from the MP cadre who are not from the state. The team can also appoint junior officers to help in the investigation.

“Since we have not issued any notice to respondent No. 6 (Member Rajput) or any other private respondents, we would like to clarify that the findings made in this order shall not be prejudicial to them,” the court said.
