Tragic attack by a wild elephant claims the life of a villager

On August 16, tragedy struck in Kanchanaburi province when a villager was attacked by a wild elephant. The victim, 57-year-old Mr Phatthaya, was collecting bamboo shoots when he encountered the elephant.

According to reports, Mr Phatthaya had been fishing earlier and was unaware of the impending danger. He suffered severe internal injuries and died instantly from the elephant's violent attack.

Rescue workers responded quickly when they learned of the incident. During the rescue operation, another rescue worker, Mr Chingchai, fell victim to another wild elephant nearby but survived with injuries.

This incident highlights the high risk of human-wildlife conflict, especially since wild elephants often stay close to human settlements. The site of the attack, near Moo 4, Dan Mae Chalaep sub-district, is known for its population of wild elephants that sometimes come to the Srinakarin Dam to fetch water.

Not surprisingly, areas like this are increasingly facing problems as wildlife and local communities coexist. The apparent lack of awareness among villagers about the elephants during daylight hours exacerbates the risk of such incidents.

Following the tragedy, local authorities, including Mr Phaitoon, the wildlife sanctuary manager, coordinated with police and medical staff to recover the victim's body. The focus of the rescue effort shifted to ensuring that no other animal fell victim to the same wild elephant.
