Nationwide protests break out following the tragic death of a doctor in Calcutta

The murder and alleged sexual assault of a doctor on August 9 at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata has sparked widespread protests among students and young doctors.

Protests have been taking place not only in West Bengal but also in several other states including Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Mumbai. The Calcutta High Court has ordered the case to be transferred from the state police to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

The tragic incident, which occurred while the doctor was on duty, led to nationwide strikes and protests. On August 14, the protest site and the hospital premises were vandalised by a mob, prompting security forces to intervene. To maintain law and order, the Kolkata Police has enforced Section 163 around RG Kar Medical College for seven days from August 18.
