US soccer stars reveal why Emma Hayes was the key to gold in Paris 2024

The “invisible” side of the USWNT’s success

Accordingly Trinity Rodmanwho was a mainstay on the right wing, there is an element in Hayes' coaching that remains invisible.

She takes her role seriously and is matter-of-fact when it matters, but she also wants to convey one thing to her players: fun.

Whether in training or on the field, Hayes once again brings joy to this team.

“I think the fun factor is not that important in sports, but for us it was very important,” the 22-year-old told us.

“You can always hear loud music during training sessions and even on match days. [by designated team DJ Crystal Dunn]There is always dancing, there is always fun.

“I think that contributes to our success: being one and being together.”

That sense of unity and friendship was reflected on the field, where the current generation of U.S. stars thrived together.

“If a coach believes in you, that is very helpful,” added Mallory Swansonwho scored the game-winning goal against Brazil.

“She [Emma] we just kept saying, “Play with joy, have fun,” and that’s exactly what we did and you could see it.

“We are just good friends and best friends off the field, and that shows on the field as well.”

But even as her players applaud her, Hayes remains modest in her fame.

In her view, the formula for success had already been set in motion; she had simply helped to “make things easier.”

“I find [winning gold] is a combination of many things – the culmination of the team and the journey they have been on,” revealed Emma.

“I just came in and helped push something forward that was already underway.

“This team is super adaptable and we had a really good tournament.”
