“A good warm-up for what lies ahead” – Sepp Kuss optimistic after limiting losses in the time trial of the 1st stage of the Vuelta a Espana

Reigning Vuelta a Espana champion Sepp Kuss made a solid, if unspectacular, start to his 2024 season at the Spanish Grand Tour in Lisbon on Saturday afternoon, limiting his losses in the opening race in the individual time trial.

Kuss posted the 62nd fastest time on the stage. He is not known for his time trial specialism and so was unable to make much progress on the day. Instead, the American was just concerned with doing enough to keep the other red jersey contenders within reach, which he did relatively well despite losing some time to some of his rivals.

With a gap of 37 seconds to his former teammate Primoz Roglic, 36 seconds to Joao Almeida, 22 seconds to Tao Geoghegan Hart and just 19 seconds to Adam Yates, Kuss is still well in contention when looking at the times of potential challengers in the overall standings as the race draws to a close in three weeks.

“A time trial at the start of a Grand Tour is always painful,” Kuss said afterwards in an interview with the official website of Team Visma | Lease a Bike. “It was a good warm-up for what we're facing in the next few weeks. I gave it my all. I can be satisfied with the time trial I rode.”
