Kolkata rape and murder case: CBI conducts psychological tests on main accused: report

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday began the psychological examination of the main accused Sanjay Roy in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, sources told news agency ANI.

A team of psychologists and behavioural analysts from Delhi's Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) has arrived in Kolkata to conduct the necessary tests, sources told PTI. The rape and murder of the trainee doctor have sparked nationwide outrage and elicited reactions from various sectors.

The body of the 31-year-old junior doctor, who was allegedly raped and killed in a government hospital seminar room, was found on August 9. A preliminary autopsy report indicated that the victim was sexually assaulted and killed. It said she was bleeding from her eyes, mouth and private parts. She also had injuries on her left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger and lips.

Sanjay Ghosh in custody:
In addition to the tests, the investigating agency in charge of the case had already taken Roy into custody.

Kolkata police arrested Roy (33), who joined the police force as a volunteer in 2019. Police claim the accused was married at least four times and was known as a “womanizer”.

The accused, a trained boxer, came into contact with some senior police officials over the years, following which he was transferred to the Kolkata Police Welfare Board and posted at the police outpost of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The CBI’s tough action against former school principals:
CBI investigators are examining the call details and chats of former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Sandip Ghosh in connection with their investigation into the rape and murder of a doctor. Ghosh, who appeared before the CBI officials for the third consecutive day on Sunday, was asked to give details of the phone calls he made before and after the incident at the hospital, an official of the central investigation agency said.

Investigators are also considering contacting the mobile operator to get details about Ghosh's phone calls and data usage, the official added.

The former principal, who was interrogated by the agency officials for over 13 hours from Saturday till midnight, reached the CBI office at CGO Complex in Salt Lake at 11 am on Sunday. The former principal was also questioned about who had ordered the renovation of the rooms near the seminar hall in the emergency building of the hospital after the incident.

So far, the CBI has questioned over 20 people as part of its investigation, including some officials of the Kolkata Police.

On August 14, a mob of 5,000 to 7,000 people, including several private citizens, entered the RG Kar Hospital, attacked protesting doctors and medical students and attempted to loot the premises, forcing security officials to disperse the crowd.

On August 16, Kolkata police said they had arrested 19 people suspected of involvement in the mob violence on the hospital premises.

On August 9, a junior doctor was found dead in the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, sparking nationwide protests by doctors and healthcare professionals.
