A pedestrian was struck and killed while crossing the street in Santa Ana. According to police, the driver initially fled the scene of the accident but returned moments later.

According to Santa Ana police, the accident occurred Friday evening around 8:20 p.m. near Fairview and Harvard Streets.

When Orange County Fire Department officers and paramedics arrived, they found the victim, a 32-year-old man, lying on the ground following the collision. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say the man was struck while crossing Fairview Street “in moving traffic.”

“The driver of the vehicle, an adult female, returned to the scene of the accident a few minutes later and cooperated with the investigation,” the SAPD statement said. “The vehicle showed damage consistent with a collision.”

They say neither drugs nor alcohol appear to have played a role in the crash; they are investigating the accident as a possible hit-and-run.
