Janis Joplin's death

On October 4, 1970, Janis Joplin was found dead on the floor of her room at the Landmark Motor Hotel by her close friend and tour manager John Byrne Cooke. While newspapers documented that only alcohol was found in the room, a 1983 book by Thomas Noguchi and Joseph DiMona tells a different story.

What was the cause of Janis Joplin's death?

Joseph and Thomas' book reports that after Janis' death, a friend removed traces of narcotics from her room.

However, the person returned the substances after realizing that an autopsy would reveal the reason for the star's mysterious death. Joplin died of drug abuse.

Her close friend Peggy Caserta insisted that she died from a laceration to the head that she sustained when the heel of her sandal caught in the shaggy carpet and she lost her balance.

Byrne once revealed that Janis had taken a much stronger drug than usual on the Sunday she died. However, according to concert performer and friend Bill Graham, the songwriter's self-destruction was partly due to the pressures of her newfound fame.

The singer-songwriter was cremated at the Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park and Mortuary in Los Angeles. In accordance with Joplin's wishes, her ashes were scattered from an airplane into the Pacific Ocean.
