Famous RAF aircraft at an air show at Southend Airport this weekend

Famous Royal Air Force aircraft were photographed flying over Southend this weekend as the town was treated to what is often described as a 'mini airshow'.

The RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) Lancaster bomber and a Typhoon jet were stationed at Southend Airport between Thursday and Sunday as they took centre stage at the Eastbourne Airshow.

For the last two years, South Essex Airport has hosted RAF aircraft taking part in events at Eastbourne and Clacton. Affectionately known as a 'mini airshow' for Southend, this event also featured the BBMF's Spitfires and Hurricanes, as well as Red Arrows.

Unfortunately, the Red Arrows were not based at Southend this year, and the Spitfires and Hurricanes were also grounded following the tragic Spitfire crash earlier in the year.

Members of the Echo Camera Club had their eyes on the skies as RAF planes flew in and out of Southend for the Eastbourne Airshow. The event began at 2.15pm yesterday and finished at 5pm.

Those who missed the Lancaster Bomber and the Typhoon have another chance to see them today as they are taking part in the final day of the show.

Spectators at the airport may also be in for a spectacular sight, as the Lancaster will be performing a flypast today during the Vulcan Classic Jets Day.

On open day, visitors can take a guided tour of the Vulcan bomber and its cockpit for an additional fee, while also viewing the weapons the aircraft carried during its time with the RAF.
