Father of a rape and murder victim from Calcutta

The incident sparked nationwide protests.

Calcutta:

The father of the 31-year-old junior doctor who was found brutally raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 has described the devastating moment he discovered his daughter's body. Speaking to NDTV, the father, still reeling from the tragedy, recalled a late-night call informing him that his daughter had allegedly committed suicide.

“I got a call at 11pm, arrived at the hospital at midnight and didn't finally see her body until 3:30am,” he said. “Only I know what I went through when I saw her. She was not wearing any clothes. She was just wrapped in a bedsheet. Her legs were spread, one hand was on her head.”

The incident sparked nationwide protests and the Indian Medical Association (IMA) went on strike for 24 hours from August 17 to 18.

“We have lost everything, we have nothing left. We want justice,” said the father.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today conducted a psychological test of prime suspect Sanjoy Roy, a volunteer of the Kolkata Police who was posted at RG Kar Medical College on the night of the incident. Roy had access to all departments and the CBI team, including five experts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), is probing every nook and cranny.

Mamata Banerjee gets beaten up

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday led a protest rally from Moulali to Dorina Crossing area in Kolkata demanding justice for the doctor and demanded that the perpetrators be executed. The victim's father took a swipe at the Bengal Chief Minister and said he had lost faith in the Trinamool leader.

“At first I had full confidence in her, but now I don't. She demands justice, but why does she say that? She can take care of it; she does nothing,” he said.

The victim's mother, standing next to her husband, criticised the much-vaunted welfare programmes of Ms Banerjee's government, which he dismissed as empty promises. The mother used Goddess Lakshmi as a metaphor to question the programmes that are meant to make women's lives easier.

“All of Mamata Banerjee's plans – the Kanyashree plan, the Lakshmi plan – are all pseudo-plans. Anyone who wants to avail of these plans should please check beforehand whether their Lakshmi is even safe at home,” she said.

Investigation against former school principal

Another person at the centre of the ongoing investigation is former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, whose actions in the wake of the crime are being scrutinised. Mr Ghosh, who resigned from his post just two days after the body was found, was questioned by the CBI for several days.

Investigators are examining his phone records and his behavior before and after the incident, focusing on why he made the victim's parents wait nearly three hours before allowing them to see their daughter's body.

The CBI is also investigating whether the crime was committed intentionally and whether the former headmaster was involved in it.
