Police charge second wife and her relatives with death of education baron Shivajirao Jondhale

Thane: Four months after the death of education baron Shivajirao Jondhale, the Dombivli police have filed a case against his second wife and four of her relatives for alleged intentional killing, an official said on Sunday.

Since the investigation into the case registered on Saturday is still ongoing, no arrests have been made yet.

Jondhale, a cancer patient, died on April 19 due to lack of proper treatment after the accused brought him home from the hospital. He was held captive from April 6 to April 16, said the FIR, which was filed on a complaint by Jondhale's son.

Prima facie, the motive was unlawful appropriation of property, the official said, citing the FIR.

The accused are Jondhale’s second wife and four of her relatives.

The charges were based on Section 304 (intentional killing not amounting to murder), Section 387 (putting or attempting to put any person in fear of death or grievous hurt for the purpose of extortion), Section 383 (extortion), Section 384 (extortion), Section 420 (cheating and fraudulently inducing delivery of property) and Section 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.

A police official said the case was registered under IPC because Jondhale's death dates back to April 19, a few weeks before the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita replaced the British-era penal code.
