Police-involved shooting claims suspect's life in Opelika

OPELIKA, Alabama (WSFA) – Opelika police say one person is dead following a police-involved shooting overnight.

Police were called to the Century Park Apartments in the 1800 block of Century Boulevard shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday for a suspicious incident.

According to authorities, the officer found a person armed with a firearm. A struggle ensued between the person and the officer, during which the officer fired his weapon, striking the person.

Medical assistance was provided, but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's State Bureau of Investigations is investigating the shooting. OPD says all evidence and video has been turned over to the SBI.

Once the investigation is complete, authorities said, the results will be turned over to the Lee County District Attorney's Office, which will present the findings to a Lee County grand jury.
