Miami Beach commissioner says fugitive shooter arrested | Newsradio WFLA Orlando

The manhunt for the man accused of pointing a gun at a Miami Beach city councilor is over.

According to Commissioner Joseph Magazine, suspect Christopher Pitre was arrested on August 17 while committing another crime.

“He was actually arrested shoplifting at Walgreen's,” the magazine said. “A very alert employee alerted the police and then he fled from the police.”

Pitre, 35, was arrested at a gas station not far from Walgreen's.

Court records show that several arrests have already been made, but an incident on April 11 made headlines.

Pitre was found sleeping in the commissioner's car and when the magazine woke him up, Pitre said he pointed a gun at him.

“I opened the car door and someone fell out,” he said. “I say, 'Come back,' and I also call 911.”

The encounter in the parking garage of Magazine's apartment complex is recorded on video by surveillance cameras.

“[Pitre] “I turn around. He's about five feet in front of me. He has a gun and he's pointing it at my chest,” Magazine said. “There's a red laser beam aimed at my chest and I raise my hands.”

Pitre was arrested a short time later and ended up in a drug abuse treatment center with an ankle bracelet.

The magazine said Pitre should have stayed in prison awaiting trial instead of deactivating his ankle monitor and escaping.

“Many people [were] nervous,” he said. “Especially now that school has just started, [and] People coming back to the neighborhood and not knowing where that person is.”

Pitre is back behind bars on 25 charges.
