Kurdish women’s movements in solidarity with Indian women

The Free Women’s Movement (TJA) and the Yazidi Women’s Freedom Movement (TAJÊ) have published a letter of solidarity in support of the resistance that began after the rape and murder of a doctor in India.

The letter published by TJA states: “Dear Indian sisters, from Kurdistan we welcome your resistance to rape in your country. We see that misogyny in India, as in Kurdistan, is based on sexism, nationalism and religionism. The slogan 'Jin, Jiyan, Azadî' [Woman, Life, Freedom] is the philosophy of free living and this philosophy forms the basis of our struggle against the male-dominated mentality that cannot tolerate women's freedom.”

In his letter, TAJÊ welcomed the struggle of Indian women and said: “We greet you from Şengal, the homeland of our women who are symbols of resistance. We watch with great appreciation the struggle of women in India for freedom. The demonstration of thousands of women with the slogan 'Jin, Jiyan, Azadî' gave us morale and strength. We see, greet and congratulate your struggle.”

On August 9, a doctor was raped and murdered in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Women took to the streets in many parts of the country. At various demonstrations near universities, theaters and bus stations, women held hands and chanted “We want justice.” “Never before have we seen such a large gathering of women marching through the city at night,” said journalists working in the area.

Since the murder, women across the country have been organizing protests under the slogan “Take back the night.” On the eighth day of protests, thousands of women took to the streets calling for “justice” and carrying the banner “Jin, Jiyan, Azadî.” [Woman, Life, Freedom].
