Man dies when large tree falls on car in West End neighborhood

HENRICO COUNTY, Virginia – A motorist was killed Sunday afternoon when a violent storm downed a tree in Henrico's west end.

By 4:45 p.m., police were receiving numerous storm-related calls, said Henrico Police Lt. Kevin Howdyshell.

Shortly before 4:50 p.m., police responded to a 911 call reporting a tree had fallen on a vehicle in the 800 block of Maybeury Road in Tuckahoe.

“Upon arrival, an adult male was found dead in a large tree on the roof of a vehicle,” police said.

Officials said Maybeury will be closed between Avalon Drive and Edson Road for “an extended period of time.”

“The Henrico Police Crash Team is on scene with Henrico Fire,” Howdyshell said.

The man's name has not been released and no further details were available at last check.

According to the National Weather Service, a severe thunderstorm warning was issued at 4:42 p.m. for a severe thunderstorm over Tuckahoe, with radar-indicated wind gusts up to 60 mph and hailstone-sized hail.

Meteorologists had warned that while storms would not affect all areas, those that did occur would bring very heavy rainfall with the possibility of local flooding and strong, gusty winds. While the main danger was damaging winds, there was also the possibility of heavy hail.
