Despite intermittent rains, women of all ages and backgrounds gathered in different areas like Jadavpur, Garia, Behala Parnashree, Khanna, Lake Town and other places of the city, chanting slogans like “We want justice”.

Leading figures of Bengali cinema such as directors Arindam Sil and Kaushik Ganguly and actress Churni Ganguly also protested and demanded justice for the victims.

Members of Delhi Medical Associations (RDA) held a candlelight march and attempts were made to speak to the public to raise awareness about the incident.

Pressure mounted on West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress over its handling of the crime, with the victim's parents criticising alleged attempts to stifle spontaneous public outcry even as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee publicly protested against the rape.

The CBI is continuing its investigation in the case after taking over the investigation from the Kolkata Police on the orders of the Calcutta High Court. The CBI team has carried out 3D laser mapping of the emergency department of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The CBI has also conducted psychological tests of the main accused in the case.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has taken cognizance of the gruesome rape and murder on its own initiative. A bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra is scheduled to hold a hearing on Tuesday.
