“Through you, we want to convey a message to the people of the whole country. We are grateful to all our countrymen, the people of the world and the state and request you to stand by us until the accused is caught. We only wish that this does not happen to any mother and that no one loses their child like we did,” the news agency ANI quoted the mother of the aspiring doctors as saying.

The deceased doctor's mother also accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of failing to properly address the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital case and alleged on Sunday that the Trinamool Congress president was trying to stop the protests.

“She (Mamata Banerjee) said the culprits would be arrested as soon as possible, but so far only one person has been detained. I am sure there are more people in the hospital involved in the incident. I think the chief minister is trying to stop the protests. That is why the police have issued prohibitory orders today to stop the gathering of protesters,” the victim's mother told the media at the family home in North 24 Parganas district.

She told ANI that the hospital administration initially told her that her daughter had committed suicide.

“First we got a call from the hospital that your daughter was ill, then the connection was cut. Then when I called and asked what happened, they told me to come to the hospital. When we called again, the (caller) introduced himself as 'deputy senior doctor' and said your daughter had committed suicide. She had joined duty on Thursday, we got this call on Friday at 10.53 am. When we reached there, we were not allowed to see her, we were allowed to see her only at 3 am. Her pants were open, she was wearing only a piece of cloth on her body. Her hand was broken and blood was coming out of her eyes and mouth. Just by looking at her, it seemed like someone had murdered her,” ANI quoted her as saying.

“I told them it's not suicide, it's murder. We worked so hard to make our daughter a doctor, but she was murdered,” she claimed.

The parents told NDTV that they had lost faith in the chief minister after seeing how the Kolkata police had handled the case. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was at least making efforts, her father told the news channel. He also said he had given the CBI a page from his daughter's diary.

“Initially, I had full faith in her (Mamata Banerjee), but now I don't. She is demanding justice, but why is she saying this? She can take care of it, she is not doing anything,” he claimed when asked about the investigation being conducted by the state.

“They say, 'We want justice'. But those in the public who say the same are trying to lock them up,” NDTV quoted him as saying.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has taken cognizance of the rape and murder of a doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra will hear the case on August 20.

The body of the trainee doctor was found in the seminar room of RG Kar Hospital on August 9. The next day, the Kolkata police arrested volunteer Sanjoy Roy in this connection.

The Calcutta High Court directed the CBI to take over the investigation after expressing dissatisfaction with the Calcutta Police.
