Coraline takes on much bigger films and wins

What does CorallineWhat makes the re-release of so impressive is the comparison of the original film with all the other films that generally had much greater notoriety. To this day The Lion King remains the most successful hand-drawn animation film and Shrek2 held the title of the most successful animated film of all time at the time of Coralline's original release. They were giants compared to Coralline, So it's interesting to think about why Selick's film outperformed such heavyweights in 2024.

Coralline had the advantage of being a 3D re-release, which meant that ticket prices were higher than the other films, which were all in standard format. Still, 3D may have been a big selling point for many, as Coralline is considered by many to be one of the most impressive 3D applications and alongside Avatarwhich came out ten months later, was a big part of the 3D boom of the early 2010s. CorallineThe opening weekend for its release came pretty close to the 2022 re-release Avatarwhich grossed $10 million on its opening weekend. That means there is a difference of Coralline and the highest-grossing film of all time.
