Calcutta rape and murder case: DNA evidence from autopsy confirms involvement of accused Sanjay Roy

Investigators on Sunday confirmed finding DNA traces of accused Sanjay Roy, who was arrested in the rape and murder case of the RG Kar Hospital junior doctor, TOI reported. According to the autopsy report, the blood and skin traces found under the victim's fingernails perfectly matched the injuries sustained by Roy, further cementing his involvement in the rape and murder case that has shocked the nation.

The autopsy report provided details of the death and explanations of the injuries found on the victim's body.

What did the autopsy reveal in the Calcutta rape and murder case?

The report states that death occurred due to suffocation and strangulation, with the victim showing numerous signs of struggle and injuries – this indicates that the victim was struggling despite being half asleep, TOI reported. The scratches on the victim's face and other marks indicate a desperate attempt to resist. The accused had an advantage as the victim was sleeping at the time of the attack, the report further stated. Moreover, the trainee doctor's thyroid cartilage fractured when her attacker forcefully closed her mouth to stop her from screaming, leading to further strangulation, TOI noted. The report also mentioned that the body bore blood stains, scratch marks and bruises, including injuries on the lips, abdomen, right hand, fingers and a broken collarbone.

  • At first glance, death appeared to have occurred by strangulation and the body showed numerous signs of injuries and struggle.
  • There were blood stains on the face, eyes and face, scratches on various parts of the body and bleeding in the genital area.
  • The victim has marks and bruises on his face, eyes and neck.
  • She tried to defend herself, and deep injuries and scratches were also visible on the defendant's hands.

Which rumors were refuted by the autopsy report?

The autopsy report also refuted some rumours that had spread in the wake of the horrific incident that sparked nationwide protests. Reports that semen was found in three people during the autopsy were baseless, a source in Kolkata police told TOI. “In an autopsy, it is impossible to distinguish the semen of three people with the naked eye,” he said.

Moreover, according to the TOI report, contrary to social media reports claiming that the victim's pelvis was broken, the autopsy report did not show any signs of this.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is currently probing the case, also began the psychological examination of the 33-year-old main accused on Sunday, ANI had previously reported.
