Class 12 student gets into trouble after writing against CM Mamata, Kolkata police arrest her

Calcutta. Kolkata Police on Sunday arrested a Class 12 student for posting inflammatory, abusive comments and death threats against West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee on her social media handles. The incident took place after the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Hospital. A section of social media users, including TMC leaders, had expressed concern over the Instagram post, which also mentioned Indira Gandhi. These people urged the police to take action.

In a statement, the Kolkata Police said that a complaint was received that the accused student uploaded three Instagram stories related to the recent incident at RG Kar Hospital. In them, the victim's photo and identity were revealed, which is a crime. The accused also posted two stories against the West Bengal Chief Minister. These contained objectionable comments and death threats. These posts were inflammatory and could trigger social unrest and incite communal hatred at any time.

It was reported that the accused student, Kirti, is in class 12. Her family told the media that the girl made a mistake. She committed this mistake because she was carried away by her emotions. Later she understood it, we apologize. The arrested girl will be produced in court on Monday. Her family and the entire neighborhood are in shock. A neighbor told AnyTV, “She is a child, she did this without understanding. It was a mistake. They are saddened by this. We hope the girl will be released soon.” The family is seeking legal advice to get bail. Other neighbors said, “They are good people, we hope the girl will be released on bail.”

Police sent warnings to 1,000 people
So far, the police have issued summons to around 1,000 people for spreading misinformation and publishing the identity of the victim in the RG Kar case. Two doctors – Kunal Sarkar and Suvarna Goswami – have also been summoned by the police for spreading misinformation. They will visit the police headquarters during the doctors' rally. However, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh, who was among those who objected to this post, wrote on Instagram, “If you want to protest, do it a hundred times with appropriate language and logic. But the police will issue you a warning for misinformation and deliberate provocation.”
