Jessica Wongso released on parole after 8 years in prison – Society

Essica Kumala Wongso, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the premeditated murder of her friend Wayan Mirna Salihin in a Central Jakarta cafe in 2016, was released on parole on Sunday after serving eight years in prison.

Jessica's lawyer Otto Hasibuan said her client was released early after being sentenced to nearly five years for “good behavior.”

Jessica is now required to report regularly to probation officers at a detention center in East Jakarta until 2032, he added.

Otto further said that Jessica plans to seek a judicial review of her verdict and claimed that his team had found several new pieces of evidence in this high-profile case.

“We have discussed this matter with Jessica. We respect the court's decision […] but we feel that the verdict does not match our version of events, so we will seek to initiate a judicial review,” he said on Sunday, as reported Compass.

In October 2016, the Central Jakarta District Court found Jessica guilty of premeditated murder for spiking Mirna's coffee with cyanide. However, Jessica, then 27, maintained that she was innocent.
