Dental student claims doctor was attacked and kidnapped in Rohtak; accused arrested

A dental student in Rohtak city of Haryana state claims she was kidnapped and attacked by a junior doctor in the anatomy department of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS).

The police have arrested the accused and launched an investigation into the case, reported India Today. According to the student's complaint, the accused doctor kidnapped her from PGIMS on August 16, took her to Ambala and Chandigarh and abused her.

However, neither the victim's statement nor the investigations to date have revealed any evidence of sexual harassment or rape, police officials said.

Rohtak Deputy Commissioner of Police Virendra Singh told the news agency that a first-year BDS student of PGIMS filed a complaint on Sunday evening, claiming that she was abducted and assaulted. The case attracted widespread attention after a video of the student went viral on social media site X. In the video, she can be seen crying and showing the wounds on her body caused by the alleged attack.

She also alleged that the resident doctor had been harassing her for the past seven months. She also claimed that the accused had threatened her with dire consequences if she stood up to him and raised the issue with the university administration.

The institution reportedly expelled the doctor.

Maninder Kaushik, a resident anatomist at PGIMS, has been expelled from the institution and banned from the campus, a spokesperson for the University of Health Sciences, Rohtak, confirmed, according to The Times of India.

Further details on the case are currently awaited.

This incident came against the backdrop of nationwide protests by thousands of doctors and members of the medical community in response to the recent brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor at the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
