Weld County investigates Sunday's death of a prison inmate

A 56-year-old male inmate at the Weld County Jail was found unconscious Sunday afternoon and all attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful, the 19th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team said in a news release Sunday.

Weld County Sheriff's Office officers found the inmate at 3:09 p.m. Sunday and attempted CPR. They called medical personnel and paramedics. The inmate was pronounced dead and the Critical Incident Response Team was called to investigate.

The Weld County Coroner plans to release the identity of the deceased inmate once relatives have been notified. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Detective Brain Hunziker of the Greeley Police Department at [email protected].

Weld County Jail inmate Keith Schmedtje, 50, died in custody on May 16 of this year. And another inmate died last November after a medical emergency.

Inmate Amy Lynn Cross, 41, died in September 2021 after complaining of difficulty breathing for seven hours and receiving no medical treatment, according to a lawsuit filed by her family against the prison's medical provider and Weld County.

Two days after they were taken to the Greeley jail, unknown bags of methamphetamine were broken into, the indictment says.
