Carlos Alcaraz has apologized for his racket-smashing outburst at the Cincinnati Open

What is the story

World number three Carlos Alcaraz has publicly apologized for his outburst during the Cincinnati Open match against Gael Monfils.

The 21-year-old Spanish tennis star displayed an unusual level of frustration by smashing his racket several times on the court.

This incident occurred during the third set of a grueling match that ended with a score of 4:6, 7:6 (7:5), 6:4 in favor of Monfils.

Alcaraz admits inappropriate behavior and vows to improve

Following his defeat, Alcaraz expressed his remorse for his behavior during the match on social media on Saturday.

He admitted that his behavior was inappropriate and promised to better control his emotions in future games.

“I apologize because my attitude yesterday was not right and that's not what you should do on the track,” he wrote.

Alcaraz's defeat follows Olympic success

Alcaraz returned to the tennis court after winning the silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, narrowly losing to Novak Djokovic in the battle for the gold medal.

This defeat was particularly disappointing for him after he had already competed in the final in Cincinnati last year. There, too, Djokovic was the undisputed winner.

In an interview after the game, Alcaraz described his performance as the “worst game” of his career so far.

Monfils defeats Alcaraz in a match postponed due to rain

In a thrilling turn of events at the Cincinnati Open, Monfils emerged victorious over Alcaraz.

The match was initially postponed due to rain. Monfils led 3-1 in the second set tiebreak, but he resumed play 24 hours later and secured a 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 victory.

With this victory, Monfils became the oldest player since Jimmy Connors' triumph over Michael Stich in Memphis in 1992 to defeat an opponent ranked in the top three of the ATP rankings.
