Driver dies in accident in Pontiac

A 19-year-old driver was killed in a traffic accident in Pontiac, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office announced Monday.

The man lost control of his 2016 Dodge Charger at a high rate of speed on Franklin Road near Hugues Avenue at around 1:18 a.m. and crashed into a utility pole, a fire hydrant and a tree, sheriff's officials said in a news release.

The Pontiac resident, whose name authorities have not released, was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the car, the sheriff's office reported. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

A passenger in the car, a 20-year-old man, was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured, the press release said.

Investigators believe drugs or alcohol did not play a role.

Alcohol or drugs were involved in nearly 41% of fatal traffic crashes on Michigan's roadways in 2023, the Michigan State Police Seventh District said on X last week.
