Tragic collision between bus and van claims eleven lives

On August 18, 2024, tragedy struck in the Salempur area of Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, when a devastating head-on collision occurred between a pickup truck and a private bus.

Eleven people were killed and 26 others injured in the accident on the Budaun-Meerut highway, making it one of the deadliest road accidents in the state this year.

According to local reports, the van was travelling from Ghaziabad when it collided with the oncoming bus.

This horrific accident occurred about 14 kilometers from the Bulandshahr district headquarters and caused brief traffic disruptions on the busy highway.

Chandra Prakash Singh, the district magistrate, revealed gruesome details at a press conference: “Ten people were killed and 27 injured. The injured have been taken to different hospitals.”

Tragically, another person succumbed to their injuries in the collision, bringing the total death toll to 11.

The deceased were identified as Mukut Singh (45), Deen Nath (45), Brijesh (18), Babu Singh (19), Shishupal (27), Girraj Singh (26), Sugarpal (35), Omkar (30), Mahesh (40), Jay P (18) and Surendra (45), while the identities of two victims are yet to be confirmed.

Nine of the injured are currently being treated at private medical facilities. Three people are said to be in serious condition and have been referred to Meerut Medical College for specialized treatment.

The remaining injured were taken to the district hospital by the local health service, where they are receiving the necessary treatment.

The Chief Minister of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, has publicly acknowledged the incident and instructed local authorities to provide the highest quality medical care to those affected.

According to reports, the registration documents of both vehicles involved were up to date, indicating compliance with local regulations.

Minister of State for Forestry Arun Kumar announced plans for financial compensation: the families of the deceased will receive Rs 200,000 each and the injured will receive Rs 50,000 each to cover their medical expenses.

The authorities have launched an investigation to determine the causes of the tragedy and announced that they will take strict measures against those responsible.

This incident adds to the dismal road safety statistics in the state and underscores the need for improved traffic laws and enforcement.

There have been a number of incidents on Uttar Pradesh's roads in recent times, including previous reports of fatalities and injuries, which further increases the urgency of reforms.

Videos of the wreckage circulated on social media platforms, showing the pickup truck completely demolished, with the private bus also suffering severe damage to the front.

This tragic event is also a reminder that there is a shared responsibility on motorways and that both drivers and companies must give top priority to safety.

Similar disasters have occurred on the roads of Uttar Pradesh in recent years, highlighting the ongoing problem of road safety.
