Preliminary hearing for man involved in car theft

JACKSON COUNTY, Kentucky (WYMT) – More details are emerging about a brutal carjacking in Jackson County that left a woman dead.

Michael Edwards is accused of attempting to steal a truck belonging to Tracy Clemmons in Annville.

A deputy sheriff testified about the events during the violent confrontation on Monday, August 19.

Edwards faces at least eight different charges in connection with a series of events that occurred on Saturday, August 10.

Deputy Jason Weaver spoke about how Clemmons' life ended when she tried to hold on to her truck, which Edwards had stolen.

Deputy Weaver said he was dispatched to the T Mart in Annville after a series of events began shortly before 10 a.m.

Initially, the incident was reported as a hit-and-run and people were asked to look out for a blue Chevy Silverado.

There was also a woman at the scene who was unresponsive but breathing.

There was a report of an altercation between a man and a woman before he fled in the truck. It was later determined that Clemmons had tried to prevent the carjacking, in which she was killed.

Deputy Weaver also testified that there was a manhunt for Edwards and that during that time he also robbed another woman at gunpoint and stole clothes from her clothesline. Later, a London police officer tackled him to the ground before he could be arrested.

The judge concluded that there was probable cause and the case will be presented to a grand jury.

A second suspect in the case, Richard Marcum, is scheduled to appear in Jackson County District Court on the charges later today.
