Teenager convicted of accidentally shooting middle school student in Topeka

TOPEKA, Kansas (WIBW) – A teenager convicted in the death of an Eisenhower Middle School student has been sentenced, Katie Garceran of the Shawnee County District Attorney's Office told 13 NEWS.

Joshua Garcia was sentenced on Friday, August 16, to 54 months in the Kansas Juvenile Correctional Complex and one year of post-release supervision. Garcia's conviction was in connection with the shooting death of 13-year-old Kaleb Lane.

On March 16, 2023, Topeka Police responded to a shooting in the 1300 block of SW Garfield Ave., where they found Lane with life-threatening injuries.

Lane was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Garcia, 14 at the time of the shooting, was found guilty on June 13, 2024. Garcia was found guilty of second-degree manslaughter and criminal use of a firearm by a juvenile.
