Notre Dame Fighting Irish injury report: Who will be ready for Week 1?

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have struggled with injuries this summer.

From players on the road to recovery to injuries fresh from fall training camp, Notre Dame had some pretty big question marks hanging over it this fall.

Most recently, cornerback Chance Tucker suffered a lower leg/knee injury during a practice game on Saturday, August 17th.

Head coach Marcus Freeman told the media that he was unsure about the severity of the cornerback's injury.

The potential loss of Freeman as CB creates a massive lack of depth at the position.

Coming off the injured list is veteran cornerback Benjamin Morrison, who recently underwent shoulder surgery. Unless Morrison is fully healthy for the Fighting Irish's season opener against Texas A&M, Notre Dame will have just four defensive backs available.

Two other Irish athletes returning from injury are preseason All-Americans: tight end Mitchell Evans, who is recovering from an ACL injury, and defensive lineman Howard Cross III, who is battling a hamstring injury and workload issues.

Neither Evans nor Cross participated in Notre Dame's scrimmage on Saturday, but Freeman said the team should be ready and available if it had a game today.

Freeman and the Fighting Irish are currently ranked No. 7 nationally according to the AP Top 25, but they face a difficult road ahead, especially if they lack depth at certain positions.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish game against the Texas A&M Aggies is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. ET on August 31.
