Chrystul Kizer sentenced to 16 years in prison for murder of alleged abuser

KENOSHA, Wisconsin – Chrystul Kizer was sentenced to 16 years in prison, including 11 years pretrial detention and five years extended probation, for killing Randall Phillip Volar III, then 34, and accusing him of abusing and trafficking her and other underage girls.

Earlier this year, Kizer pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter, a crime that carries a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison. This case was historically unprecedented as it was the first case in which the charge of sex trafficking was used as an affirmative defense in a Wisconsin trial.

Kizer, now 23, is accused of shooting Volar twice in the head, setting his house on fire and fleeing the scene in his car. She was arrested on a warrant for another domestic incident after attempting to flee to Louisiana.

Chrystul Kizer was 17 years old when she killed her alleged abuser, who she said had also abused and trafficked other young black girls in the Kenosha area. Prosecutors argued it was intentional and also accused her of stealing a computer and cash.

In 2022, the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled that Kizer could use an affirmative defense as part of his defense strategy against the prosecution.

Chrystul Kizer is supported by numerous justice reform and advocacy groups who believe that the killing of the abuser she is accused of was justified.
