Victims of fatal pedestrian accident in Weyers Cave with two dead identified

WEYERS CAVE – Virginia State Police have identified the two pedestrians killed in a crash on Route 11 Saturday evening.

A 2003 Dodge Caravan was traveling north on Route 11 when the driver was unable to avoid a collision with two pedestrians crossing the highway about a half-mile north of Weyers Cave Road in Augusta County, according to police.

According to police, Opal C. Nelson, 83, and Carolyn M. Childress, 72, both of Staunton, died at the scene of the accident. According to police, neither was wearing high-visibility clothing.

The driver of the trailer, Danielle N. Bennington, 39, of Mount Crawford, and a passenger, Joshua P. Compton, 37, both suffered minor injuries, police said. Both were wearing seat belts.

The crash remains under investigation.

Following the accident, Virginia State Police also arrested 41-year-old Kristopher E. Nelson of Staunton. According to police, he refused to leave the scene of the accident and was charged with disturbing the peace, obstructing public order and two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer.
