Man wanted for attempted murder arrested in Newport

NEWPORT – Vermont State Police and Newport officers arrested 40-year-old Jason Willey at a residence on Farrar Road around 1 p.m. Saturday.

Willey, of no fixed address, was wanted on six warrants and faces new charges from both agencies. The charges include attempted murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, driving without consent, driving without a license and fleeing from police.

Authorities said Willey evaded arrest for several weeks following incidents in Newport City on July 23 and an encounter with police on August 2.

When police arrived at the Farrar Road residence, Willey attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended. He resisted arrest briefly before being taken into custody.

Willey was housed at the Northern State Correctional Facility.

His charges include:

  1. Arrest based on an arrest warrant:
  • Shoplifting ($200 bail)
  • Excessive speed/gross negligence (200 USD)
  • Excessive speed (500 USD)
  • Obstruction of justice/hindering apprehension/assault on a police officer ($500)
  • Violation of a release condition (quote and release)
  • Violation of a condition of release (2), negligent operation, operating while license suspended (DLS) (500 USD)
  1. New fees (VSP):
  • Operation without the owner’s consent (OOC)
  • Increased OOC
  • DLS
  • Negligent operation
  • Escaping a police officer
  • Resisting arrest
  1. Arrested for the Newport Police Department:
  • Attempted murder
  • Serious bodily harm/deadly weapon
