Kamala Harris takes back Republicans’ freedom

MSNBC's Ayman Mohyeldin recently highlighted Vice President Kamala Harris' strategic use of two powerful words: “freedom” and “independence.” He argued that she was taking those terms “straight from the mouths of Republicans,” reinvigorated by her progressive campaign alongside her running mate Tim Walz.

These terms have long been co-opted by the Republican Party, but Harris and Walz are looking to reclaim them, particularly as they campaign against Donald Trump. This approach is designed to appeal to voters who are disillusioned with the current Republican message.

Mohyeldin explained that there are reasons for the success of this tactic. He pointed out: “In recent decades, Republicans have stopped being the natural mediators of [freedom and liberty].”

He further pointed to the contradictions within the party, saying that they “fight tooth and nail to control women's bodies or control what books children can read or what bathrooms people can use.” This shift in policy provides fertile ground for Harris' campaign to redefine these concepts.
