“I would like to address the media reports about me that have emerged today in connection with a situation that occurred on board a flight to Ireland last weekend,” Cherilus wrote.

“The flight was unexpectedly delayed by about four hours and did not depart until after 00:30. In preparation for the unexpected night flight, I took a sleeping pill that I do not normally take, which resulted in behavior that is not in keeping with my character, and I would like to apologize to the passengers and flight crew.”

Cherilus played as a right tackle for the Lions, Colts and Buccaneers in his NFL career, which spanned from 2008, when he was selected in the first round by Detroit, to 2016.

During his career, he started 116 regular season games and appeared in 16 more.

“Delta flight 154 from Boston to Dublin returned to Boston Logan on August 17 due to an unruly passenger and was met by police,” a Delta spokesperson said in a statement to Boston 25 News this weekend.

“Delta does not tolerate any illegal behavior and will cooperate with law enforcement authorities in this regard. We apologize to our customers for the delay to their travel.”

The passengers were rebooked on a flight departing Boston on Sunday and arriving in Dublin on Monday.
