One dead and two seriously injured in traffic accident in Nelson County

Virginia State Police are investigating a two-vehicle crash that left one person dead and two others seriously injured in Nelson County Sunday evening.

The accident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. at the intersection of Route 29 South and Tye Brook Highway.

A GMC Sierra was traveling south on 29 when police say the driver was unable to avoid a collision with a Ram 1500 that had entered the intersection. The Ram then struck two traffic signs and came to rest in the median, where it caught fire.

The driver of the Ram, 75-year-old Avis W. Armentrout Jr. of Roseland, died at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt. His passenger, 74-year-old Martha J. Armentrout, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.

The driver of the Sierra, a 16-year-old female from Nelson County, also suffered serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital. She was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
