Second man charged in shooting death of Hoover High School student released from hospital; taken to jail

HOOVER, Alabama (WBRC) – The second suspect in the shooting death of a 16-year-old Hoover High School student is now in jail.

Bryan Decarlos Mills Jr., 25, was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on Sunday. His bail was set at $440,000.

Mills is charged with one count of attempted murder and four counts of discharging a firearm into an inhabited structure/vehicle.

On August 12, Hoover police responded to The Benton Apartment Homes on Primm Lane and found a 16-year-old boy who had been shot while sitting in a car waiting for his family to drive him to school.

The student was taken to UAB Hospital with serious injuries. Police say his recovery process is ongoing, but his condition is stable.

According to Hoover police, two men approached the vehicle and began firing several shots at the car, striking the victim multiple times. Two more men came out of an apartment and fired several shots at Mills and 21-year-old Marlon Williams, who left the scene in a vehicle. Hoover investigators have found no evidence that the victim was involved in any activity leading up to the shooting and believe he was mistakenly identified as someone else.

Later that morning, Hoover Police were contacted by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office regarding a man who was at the McAdory Fire Department in McCalla with a gunshot wound.

The man, whom police identified as Mills Jr., was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

According to Lt. Daniel Lowe, Hoover PD public information officer, investigators determined that Mills Jr. was one of the suspects who shot at the victim's car. Police also arrested Williams, who drove Mills Jr. to the McAdory Fire Department.

According to police, Williams was driving a vehicle stolen in Hoover in March.

The other two men were released and no charges will be filed against them at this time.

Williams is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on a total bail of $500,000.

He is accused of attempted murder, four counts of firing a firearm at an inhabited building/vehicle and receiving stolen goods.
