Post office gets ramp after long legal battle – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana Traffic

SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (WISH) – The noise of construction workers echoes along East Washington Street as a ramp is finally being installed in front of the post office's front door.

This came after a long legal battle between the U.S. Postal Service and Shellie Ellison, who has been confined to a wheelchair for 27 years due to a neurological condition.

Ellison told I-Team 8 that the construction is not only a win for her, but for everyone in Shelbyville who would benefit from a ramp at the post office.

“Many people benefit from not having to climb and descend so many insanely steep stairs,” Ellison said.

It was almost ten years ago that she first had problems entering the post office. Soon she will be able to enter like everyone else.

“Did you ever think it would happen?” asked I-Team 8 reporter Kody Fisher.

“No. It's really shocking because we've been trying to change this for so long. I've personally been dealing with this for about nine years. As for the lawsuit involved, it's been going on for about four years,” Ellison said.

The fight was worth it.

She wants others to be inspired by her journey to make the world a more accessible place.

“If you come across something that you are struggling with and feel is not right, don’t just give up,” Ellison said.

I-Team 8 has asked the U.S. Postal Service for comment on why it is challenging the ramp in court, but has not yet received a response to our request.
