Glasgow trampoline park staff ‘deeply saddened’ after ‘tragic’ death of boy

Devastated staff at Flip Out in Glasgow have paid their last respects to a 10-year-old boy who tragically died after falling ill at their trampoline park.

Emergency services rushed to Flip Out on Southcroft Road in Rutherglen just before 11am on Sunday after an incident was reported. The little boy was taken by ambulance to Glasgow's Royal Hospital for Children, but was pronounced dead.

Police said his death was unexplained, although there were no suspicious circumstances. An investigation into the circumstances has been launched.

The park will remain closed today, Monday, during the investigation. Officers stood guard at the entrance to the park today and several police cars were parked in the parking lot.

Flip Out staff said the incident left them deeply saddened.

In a statement on Facebook on Monday morning, staff said the hospital remained closed. It said: “Yesterday morning, just after 9am, a 10-year-old child became ill at Flip Out Glasgow. Emergency services were immediately contacted and the child was taken to the Royal Hospital for Children where he was sadly later pronounced deceased.”

“The Health and Safety Executive has been informed and at this stage there is no evidence of any suspicious circumstances. We are cooperating fully with Police Scotland in their investigations.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic event and our deepest condolences go out to the child’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

South Lanarkshire Council said it was providing support to the teenager's schoolmates during this extremely difficult time.

A spokesman said: “Our deepest condolences go out to the child’s family and friends following this tragedy.

“The local council will provide all necessary support to his classmates and other pupils at his school.

“We are also involved as the relevant health and safety authority, but further comment on the incident should be sought from Police Scotland.”

Flip Out closed suddenly on Sunday following the accident. Staff said they would offer a refund to anyone who had made a booking. The statement read: “Flip Out Glasgow is closed today. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

“If you have already pre-booked your visit today, please email [email protected] with your booking details and we will either refund you or reschedule your booking. Please follow our social media where we will post updates on our reopening.”

A Police Scottish spokesman said: “Investigations are ongoing after a child became ill at a property on Southcroft Road, Rutherglen, shortly before 11am on Sunday 18 August 2024.”

“The child was taken by ambulance to the Royal Hospital for Children where he was pronounced dead.

“The child’s death is being treated as unexplained, although there are no suspicious circumstances, and a report will be forwarded to the public prosecutor’s office.
