Pakistan is facing internet problems due to the government's rejection of a firewall

Pakistan is currently experiencing significant internet slowdowns, with many users reporting that speeds have dropped to less than half of their usual capacity over the past week. This worrying trend is causing widespread disruptions affecting millions of users and sparking numerous complaints from businesses and individuals.

While many affected parties are quick to point to the possible installation of a national firewall as the cause, authorities have categorically denied these allegations. Government officials are sticking to their stance and insisting that the slowdown has nothing to do with new regulations or the installation of a firewall.

The root causes of this problem lie in the tightened internet restrictions imposed during and after the February elections. The social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) was blocked for security reasons. Given the political tensions, the internet's sluggishness is particularly frustrating, hindering communication and daily operations.

Doctors and business owners have mentioned that slow connectivity is particularly affecting their work, making email communication difficult and disrupting service delivery. Even simple tasks for medical staff such as sending or receiving information have become tedious and time-consuming.

The Pakistan Software House Association has taken the issue to heart and predicted that these disruptions could lead to potential losses of around $300 million. They claim the situation could hamper investments and harm the country's already fragile economy, especially since many businesses rely heavily on smooth internet services.

Internet service providers such as Shahzad Arshad's Lahore-based company are reporting similar problems. Several customers are unable to connect to international partners due to dropped connections and delayed file transfers. Other business leaders are also expressing concern about the lack of clarity brought about by the slowdown.

Pakistan's Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima responded to the outcry by saying that there was no deliberate throttling of the service and attributed the problems to the increasing use of virtual private networks (VPNs) by the population. She said the high volume of VPN traffic is currently overloading the system.

This claim has not gone down well with many citizens, especially those who believe the government is shirking responsibility for the connectivity issues. Software engineer Umayr Hassan criticized the lack of transparency and called for clearer communication from the government about the situation.

Fatima appreciated the government's persistence in modernizing its systems to strengthen cybersecurity, saying these efforts are necessary due to the ongoing cyber threats facing the country. She stressed, however, that these modernizations are not responsible for the slowdown in connectivity.

For digital civil rights activists like Fareeha Aziz, the rapid rise in VPN usage is worrying because it represents more than just internet access – it represents the fight for freedom of expression and political discourse online. Aziz argues strongly that the government needs to clarify its role, asking: “If the decline was not caused by the government, then who is responsible?”

Across Pakistan, about 110 million people are connected to the internet, making the current disruptions even more impactful, especially since political movements often thrive on social media. With supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan actively using social networking platforms to protest against the existing government, authorities appear increasingly vigilant to external communications and narratives.

Indeed, the climate around internet use is reminiscent of the tactics the government employed during the unrest that followed Khan's ouster last year. Online dissent was largely suppressed through social media bans and internet throttling, which helped nip the protests in the bud before they could gain momentum.

This latest wave of connectivity problems is prompting action: activists have approached the Supreme Court in Islamabad, demanding that internet access be recognized as a fundamental right in Pakistan's constitution. They argue that this recognition is necessary to protect citizens from unregulated surveillance measures such as those implemented under China's strict digital policies.

Pakistan's Telecommunications Authority has also hinted at potentially regulating VPN usage, further complicating the existing internet crisis. Reports suggest that there was an over 130% increase in VPN usage following the X ban, highlighting the growing demand for uncensored access even as the government works to monitor online activity.

The consequences of the current internet crisis could go far beyond mere connectivity problems and could also trigger economic losses in the IT sector. The Pakistan Software Houses Association warns of impending problems and points out that companies are likely to relocate abroad if the situation is not resolved.

It is clear that the stakes are high for Pakistan, as millions of people rely on legal and unrestricted internet access for personal and professional reasons. As the government seeks to strengthen security amid political turmoil, user resistance only underscores the need for a balance between state control and individual freedoms.

As the internet slowdown becomes more and more of a crisis, citizens and businesses are demanding urgent solutions. This pressing scenario encompasses not only the conflict over digital rights, but also the larger battle for freedom of expression amid heightened security measures.
