Jack Russell leaves a lasting legacy after tragic death

Jack Russell, the legendary lead singer of the rock band Great White, has died at the age of 63. His death leaves fans and fellow musicians mourning the loss of one of rock's most famous personalities.

Russell's family confirmed the tragic news on social media on August 15, announcing: “It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of our beloved Jack Patrick Russell – father, husband, cousin, uncle and friend.” They announced that he died peacefully surrounded by his family, including his wife Heather and son Matthew.

This heartbreaking news came just weeks after Russell announced his retirement from touring due to health issues, namely Lewy body dementia and multiple system atrophy. Lewy body dementia, which is characterized by abnormal protein deposits that impair cognitive function, is the second most common form of dementia after Alzheimer's disease.

John Corabi, former frontman of Mötley Crüe, expressed his condolences in an interview and recalled the last time he saw Russell. He described how Russell, although frail and dependent on crutches, charmed everyone with his remarkable singing talent, saying: “If you closed your eyes and listened to him, it sounded as if no time had passed.”

Jack Russell's career with Great White began in 1981, and the band was very famous in the late '80s and early '90s. Their biggest hit, “Once Bitten, Twice Shy,” peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, cementing the group's place as one of the most important acts of the era.

Tragically, Russell and the band faced great difficulties when pyrotechnics from their stage show set fire to The Station nightclub in Rhode Island during their performance, resulting in the deaths of 100 people, including guitarist Ty Longley. The incident cast a long shadow over Russell's career.

Russell's health problems were compounded by multiple injuries and his struggle with addiction, which led to him leaving the band for good in 2011. He had previously taken legal action against former bandmates for continuing to use the name Great White during his absence. The dispute was eventually settled out of court.

Great White continued to perform after Russell's departure and recently announced the hiring of Brett Carlisle as their new lead singer. Carlisle made his stage debut with the band at the Cannery Casino Hotel, ushering in what some fans hoped would be a new era for the group.

There are plans to honor Russell. Great White have announced that they will change their name to Once Bitten in honor of their former frontman. This name change coincides with the upcoming tribute concert to be held at the Arcada Theater.

The concert will include not only performances, but also discussions about Russell's upcoming autobiography, The True Tale of Mista Bone: A Rock + Roll Narrative. This book, penned by author KL Doty, attempts to capture the essence of Russell's life and contribution to rock music.
