DVIDS – News – 51st Fighter Wing integrates into Ulchi Freedom Shield 24

OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea – For the first time in recent history, the 51st Fighter Wing at Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea, is integrating its recurring squadron readiness exercises into Ulchi Freedom Shield 24. The 51st Fighter Wing readiness exercises began Aug. 19 and will continue through Aug. 23, 2024.

The 51st FW will conduct local flying and agile combat operations (ACE), not only enhancing the operational readiness of local squadrons, but also supporting the leadership training efforts of the 7th Air Fleet and U.S. Korean Forces.

“Conducting exercises of this magnitude and nature is a necessary part of our readiness here in the Republic of Korea,” said Col. William McKibban, commander of the U.S. Air Force's 51st FW. “We are here to achieve this kind of integration and show everyone that we are ready to fight tonight if we need to, from the tactical to the operational level.”

Throughout the week, the 51st Wing will join forces with members of the U.S. 7th Air Force and USFK to participate in emergency drills, train mobilization and force deployment skills, while also practicing protection and sustainment of base operations.

In addition, during this time, aircraft and personnel from the fighter squadron will deploy to and operate from a cooperating base in the Republic of Korea, enhancing the squadron's ability to conduct operations at any time, even in an unfamiliar environment.

With each training event of this nature, the 51st Wing not only works to strengthen operational capabilities in the field, but also reaffirms the United States' resolve to enhance security in the region and exemplifies its unwavering commitment to promoting peace and maintaining stability in the Pacific.

UFS 24 is an annual Republic of Korea-United States exercise designed to enhance the combined, joint, multi-domain, and interagency operating environment. The goal is to strengthen the Alliance's joint defense posture and response capabilities through live, virtual, and constructive training scenarios that reflect the diverse threats to the security environment.
