Corsicana ISD assistant principal released from hospital after injury – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

After a turbulent start to the first week of school, Collins Intermediate School had a regular school break on Monday.

On Friday, August 16, the Corsicana Independent School District announced that Assistant Principal Candra Rogers was attacked in a classroom so severely that she had to be flown by helicopter to a medical facility in Dallas.

“We need to protect our teachers. They are rare and hard to find, and we are not protecting our teachers or our students,” said Terry Garner, a parent at Collins Intermediate School.

On Monday night, Garner attended the school board meeting to ask about the district's plans to improve teacher training in dealing with disruptive students and to see if it would be transparent about problems in the classroom.

“I want them to be transparent,” Garner said.

Superintendent Stephanie Howell told NBC that Rogers had left the hospital.

“Mrs. Rogers, I spoke to her today. She is in good spirits. She told me the only thing she needs is prayers,” Howell said.

Howell did not specify what type of injuries Rogers sustained in the incident. However, she said the popular assistant principal and her husband had a deep bond with the community. The principal also stated that Rogers and her husband need not only to recover, but to improve.

“The kids love both of them. They are friendly, welcoming, warm and they just love our kids,” Howell said.

“We will train our employees on all the rules and regulations. They should use this as an opportunity to grow and get better,” Howell said.

NBC 5 learned that the district is planning a fundraiser for the Rogers and that the assistant principal may speak to the community about the incident later this week.
