ASU economics professor David Zhu accused of murdering his wife

According to police, an Arizona State University professor shot his wife in their home while their two teenage children were inside.

David Zhu, a professor in the Department of Management and Entrepreneurship at ASU's WP Carey School of Business, is accused of fatally shooting his wife, Susan Yijuan Yan, with a shotgun at their Scottsdale residence around 6:30 p.m. Saturday night, according to Scottsdale police.

Yan, 46, was found with a gunshot wound and taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said.

“This was an isolated incident that occurred inside the residence. No one else was injured in the shooting,” police said.

According to court documents obtained by Fox 10 Phoenix, Zhu told police he “tried to shoot at the wall behind” his wife.

The professor's children – a 19-year-old daughter and a 14-year-old son – told police that their parents had been “frequently” involved in domestic violence cases and that the shooting occurred at the end of a heated argument.

“None of the children expressed surprise that David had shot their mother,” police wrote in court documents.

Zhu was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He was taken to the Maricopa County Jail and ordered to post a $1 million bail, Fox 10 Phoenix reports.

He has taught at ASU since 2009. The university said he was still employed as of Monday but had been placed on leave.
