Video of rideshare driver shows ‘random’ murder of carpet cleaner in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A shocking video obtained by 8 News Now shows the moment a carpet cleaner was gunned down in the southwest Las Vegas Valley. Police described the incident as a random killing.

Kayla Alery, 27, was indicted by a Clark County grand jury on July 31.

The March 26 shooting was captured on video by a ride-share driver parked at an apartment complex near the intersection of Fort Apache Road and Twain Avenue.

“Shit, holy shit,” the driver can be heard saying on the video. “Oh my God.”

The Las Vegas Metro Police Department identified the person shot as 41-year-old Raul Cardoza-Lopez. He was at the apartment complex with his brother and gave a resident an estimate for carpet cleaning.

“This appears to be a random incident, a completely innocent, hard-working individual,” Metro Lt. Jason Johannson said in March. “He was here at work. He was shot while doing his job.”

8 News Now obtained three videos that the Clark County District Attorney's Office presented to a grand jury as evidence in its case. Alery is charged in Cardoza-Lopez's death.

Police claimed Alery immediately ran armed from the complex after shooting Cardoza-Lopez. She was eventually found by a Metro helicopter.

“He's running, we're going to tackle him to make sure he doesn't run away,” officers said over the radio.

After the shooting, officers described the suspect as a man.

“Hands up, he's walking toward the units now,” an officer said. “He's got something heavy in the front pocket of his hoodie, just so you know.”

A video from the police helicopter shows Alery being surrounded by police officers with their guns drawn. She kneels down and the police find a gun in her waistband.

According to Nevada Department of Corrections records, Alery was released from prison on parole in December 2023 and was ordered not to possess any weapons.

Alery told officers she couldn't remember where she got the gun.

According to court documents, the Clark County District Attorney's Office may seek the death penalty for Alery.
