Engineer in trouble for allegedly defrauding a farmer of GH¢99,810

The Accra Circuit Court Nine has issued an arrest warrant for a mechanical engineer who allegedly robbed a farmer of GH¢99,810.00 under the pretext of confiscating her two tractors.

The accused, Judge Kwame Amenya, did not appear in court for the hearing.

The court, presided over by Mr Samuel Bright Acquah, adjourned the case to 2 September 2024.

The prosecution said the plaintiff, Mrs Mabel Lariba Bukari, was a farmer residing in Manyira Pokuase while Amenya resided in Oyarifa.

The court heard that Ms Bukari was referred to Amenya last year by a friend who worked as an employee of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) and was able to assist the plaintiff in acquiring tractors auctioned by the ministry.

The prosecution stated that Ms Bukariin had collaborated with Amenya in an attempt to purchase the tractors.

The court heard that the defendant sent pictures of some tractors to the plaintiff for him to select two of them, adding that these (two) cost GH¢52,600.00 and GH¢62,000.00 respectively.

The court was informed that on September 14 last year, Mrs Bukari gave GH¢23,000.00 to her son, Emmanuel Apatuween Anankra, a witness in the case, who deposited the money into the MOFA/MOF trust account at the Ghana Commercial Bank Ministries branch.

According to the prosecution, the witness made a further deposit of GH¢35,000.00 into another bank account at Zenith Bank for the cost of a brand new II Raw Multi Crop Planter and a Multi Crop Thresher B 340 T.

The prosecution later said the plaintiff had asked Amenya

to refund the money sent as she did not want this equipment. Amenya agreed but later informed the complainant that tractors were up for auction and Ms Bukaria had also shown interest.

The Court was informed that Amenya was able to repay GH¢23,000.00 which was deposited into the MOFA/MOF escrow account at the Ghana Commercial Bank.

Amenya again informed Mrs Bukari that the Ministry needed food items and that the plaintiff should supply food items to cover the remaining balance of GH¢56,000.

He heard that Mrs. Bukari gave Amenya food items worth GH¢32,300.00, supplied another food items worth GH¢23,510.00 and transferred the remaining GH¢1,500.00 (in cash) to Amenya for the said tractors, but he failed to keep his promise. —GNA
