Convicted felon charged in fatal shooting of man in Moreno Valley

A convicted felon has been charged with shooting a Moreno Valley man last week.

The shooting occurred on Monday, August 12, in the 24,000 block of Bostwick Drive around 10:30 p.m., according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Office. Officers arrived to find 30-year-old Gilbert Ramirez dead at the crime scenewhich triggered a large-scale investigation to find the suspect.

He was identified by detectives as 31-year-old Joe Miramontes Jr. and arrested two days later after investigators tracked him down at a home in Pomona.

Miramontes has now been charged with possession of a loaded firearm, possession of controlled substances for sale, and additional charges of aggravated weapons and aggravated assault, officials said. He is being held in Murrieta on $1.2 million bail.

Investigators were able to determine that Miramontes and Ramirez were involved in some sort of argument prior to the shooting, which caused the suspect to pull out a gun and fire several times before fleeing the area.

During their investigation, they managed to identify him and obtain an arrest warrant against him.

According to court documents, Miramontes was previously convicted of criminal threats in Riverside County.
