Chicago:

Former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Monday and lashed out at former US President Donald Trump, saying Democrats have now “routed” him and praised the leadership of Kamala Harris.

Hillary Clinton took center stage and praised Harris' leadership. “Kamala cares, cares about children and families, cares about America. Donald only cares about himself,” Mrs. Clinton said.

“On her first day in court, Kamala said five words that still guide her: 'Kamala Harris, for the people.' That's something Donald Trump will never understand. So it's no surprise that he lies about Kamala's past. He makes fun of her name and her laugh – that sounds familiar. But now he's on the run,” Mrs. Clinton said.

When former Secretary of State Clinton began describing Donald Trump's legal troubles, the crowd at the convention chanted “Lock him up!”

“Donald Trump fell asleep at his own trial, and when he woke up, he made history in his own way – he was the first presidential candidate with 34 capital crimes convictions!” she said. Democrats then began chanting “Lock him up!”, reminiscent of the chants Trump fans made about Clinton during their 2016 confrontation.

“No matter what the polls say, we must not let up. We must not get caught up in crazy conspiracy theories. We must fight for the truth. We must fight for Kamala, just as she will fight for us,” she added.

“Together, we are breaking many cracks in the highest and hardest glass ceiling,” Hillary Clinton said in her speech to the Democrats.

“On the other side of that glass ceiling, Kamala Harris raises her hand and takes the oath of office as our 47th President of the United States.”

“Together we have brought many cracks into the highest and hardest glass ceiling. And tonight, tonight, [we are] so close to making a breakthrough once and for all,” said Mrs Clinton.

She also urged her party not to give up on the goal of breaking one of America's last remaining glass ceilings: electing a woman president. She hopes Kamala Harris will accomplish what she failed to do – become the first female president.

“The future is here!” Clinton said, adding, “I wish my mother and Kamala's mother could see it. They would say, 'Keep going.'”

The Democratic National Convention (DNC) began on Monday in Chicago.

On Tuesday, former US President Barack Obama is scheduled to give a speech on the topic “A bold vision for the future”.

On Wednesday, former President Bill Clinton and California Speaker Emeritus Nancy Pelosi will speak at the convention under the theme “A Fight for Freedom,” according to a source familiar with the schedule.

DNC officials said Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries will also deliver speeches this week.

Mike Waltz, Kamala Harris' running mate, is expected to take the stage on Wednesday to formally accept the vice presidential nomination. Harris will formally accept the presidential nomination during her speech on Thursday, an evening dedicated to the theme “For the Future.”
