A pedestrian dies in an accident in Accomack County

OAK HALL, Virginia – According to Virginia State Police, a pedestrian was killed in a traffic accident in Accomack County Monday evening.

According to police, the accident occurred shortly before 10 p.m. on Route 13, south of the intersection with Route 175. Preliminary investigations revealed that a 2004 Toyota Prius was traveling north on Route 13 when the driver allegedly struck a pedestrian traveling in the left lane.

The pedestrian, identified as 53-year-old Thomas Wharton, died on impact.

The driver of the Prius, identified as 36-year-old Judea Van Smith, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to police, there is no indication that speed played a role. It is also currently unknown whether alcohol played a role in the accident. No charges were filed at the scene of the accident, but the investigation is ongoing.
