Suspect accused of killing his estranged wife's boyfriend at a home near Katy on Wells Station Court turns himself in

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — A suspect accused of killing his estranged wife's boyfriend and then forcing her to help him dispose of the body has turned himself in.

ABC13's Courtney Carpenter was at the downtown courthouse Tuesday morning when 48-year-old Michael Maurice Mack walked in with his attorney to turn himself in. The Harris County Sheriff's Office had issued a warrant for his arrest over the weekend.

Mack is accused of breaking into his estranged wife's home on Wells Station Court in the Katy area around 3:30 a.m. last Wednesday, August 14.

Officials say the woman and her boyfriend, 53-year-old Kelvin Hinton, woke up to find Mack standing over them with a rifle. The woman said he shot Hinton in the neck with it. Mack was reportedly wearing a tactical vest and was carrying at least four guns.

Charging documents say Mack forced her to shoot Hinton's body and allegedly threatened to kill her if she didn't help him dispose of the body. He is accused of wrapping the body in bedsheets and loading it into the trunk of the woman's car.

From there, officials said they drove to Vidor, Texas, near Beaumont, where Mack allegedly dumped Hinton's body and set it on fire.

Finally, Mack's woman was able to break free and called the police.

According to court documents, Mack and the woman married in 2019 and then separated for over a year.

On Tuesday, Mack's defense attorney Wilvin Carter said officials had only heard one side of the story.

“I have spoken to my client, so we know what happened the night in question,” Carter said. “Law enforcement has only spoken to one of the parties, and that particular party has given information that is not entirely true.”

Mack is in custody and will eventually appear before a judge to set his bail.
