Felony suspect Michael Maurice Mack turned himself in to authorities Tuesday morning and is now in custody, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced.

Mack, 48, was wanted on a felony warrant in connection with the fatal shooting of 53-year-old Kelvin Hinton on August 14.

Mack is suspected of a murder in Harris County in which he allegedly forced his estranged wife to help dispose of the body in Vidor.

Hinton's body was set on fire and left in a landfill in the 1000 block of Old Highway 90 in Vidor.

statutory declaration

The probable cause affidavit for Mack's arrest sheds light on the Vidor murder and “dumping ground.”

Mack and his estranged wife had been married since 2019 but had been separated for a year and a half and were not living together at the time of the crime. She also told police Mack had been stalked in the past since their separation.
The woman had been with the victim, identified as Kelvin Hinton (53). The two had gone out the previous evening, returned to her house and gone to bed.

She was reportedly awakened around 3 a.m. on August 14 to find Mack standing over her, hitting her in the head with a rifle. He had broken into the house through a side window.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Mack put the gun to the victim's head, at which point she pushed it away and ordered him to stop. The suspect allegedly pulled the gun back and shot Hinton in the neck, killing him.

He then hit her on the head and threw her to the ground, the document says.

Mack was reportedly wearing a tactical vest and had a handgun attached to the vest and one to his hip. He then forced her to shoot the victim again by placing his hand over her hand on the gun.

The woman continued to plead for her life while Mack allegedly threatened her, saying she would help him dispose of the body because he couldn't get rid of two bodies.

Mack wrapped Hinton in bedsheets and a blanket and placed him in the back of a vehicle. The victim's cellphone and wallet were thrown into a lake and his cash for gas money was stolen.

The alleged suspect ordered the woman to take a shower while he poured bleach on her, the document says.

Mack reportedly called someone for advice on what to do next and was instructed to take the body to Louisiana and cremate it there.

He exited the highway, filled up at a gas station in Vidor, and drove to a secured property. The woman wrote down a description of the area and later told the police.

Hinton's body was removed from the blanket and set on fire. The blanket was then placed back in the truck.

Mack later got plastic bags for the bedspread and also cleaned the trunk, the document says.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office contacted Vidor Police for assistance in the investigation. The dump site was located in the 1000 block of Old Highway 90 in Vidor.

On August 16, a felony arrest warrant was issued against Mack.
